Do I even need a VPN for remote work?
If your company gives you a corporate VPN, use that for work traffic. A personal VPN covers everything else: hotel and cafe Wi-Fi, geo-blocked services while traveling, and keeping your browsing off networks you do not control. Why do all the prices jump after the first term?

NordVPN sells one at about $3.69 a month intro, Surfshark at about $3.75. Mullvad and Proton's consumer plans do not offer one.
Is a free VPN safe?
One is: Proton VPN's free tier, with unlimited data but one device, a handful of countries and medium speeds. Every other 'free VPN' pays for its servers somehow, usually with your traffic. If $5 a month is a problem, use Proton Free, not a random app-store VPN.
